Citation of AI Use
Any use of AI tools must be properly documented and cited according to the citation style specified for the course. This citation must include the name of the AI tool used, the date of use, and information about the exchange.
Each formatting style (MLA, APA, Chicago…) may have its own expectations for formatting a citation of generative AI.
In order to promote consistency across classes at the Academy, if the class does not use a specific formatting style (MLA, APA, Chicago…), then use the citation format below.
At a minimum, citations should include:
● The name of the AI tool (e.g., Copilot Chat, NotebookLM, Gemini)
● The date of use
● The original prompt (if AI-generated content is quoted or closely followed)
● A stable link and/or copy of exchange
Instructors may require you to include a summary of how the AI was used in an annotation of the source. For example, "I used Copilot to revise my thesis statement. With its feedback, I selected stronger verbs and created more flow in my writing.”
Example citation:
“Describe the theme of nature in Jane Austen’s Mansfield Park” prompt. Copilot Chat, 23 Sept. 2024, https://copilot.cloud.microsoft/?fromcode=cmmk9q81uwj&ref Origin=Other&from=BypassUnauthAppPage&internalredirect=M365Cloud.
Failure to cite AI use when required will be considered a violation of academic integrity.
